Why?

For all of those who are brave enough to speak up and protest against racism, I needed to write this poem:

Why? by Teresa Wright

Ask me why I protest
When you never were taken from your country into a foreign land and sold into slavery
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to worry about the color of your skin
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to fight to have a seat on a bus
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to be segregated
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to worry about your children being feared and hated
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to fight for your rights
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to march to be heard
Ask me why I protest
When you never had to worry about un-equal pay
Ask me why I protest
When you never have to worry that a cop may shoot you because of your color
Ask me why I protest
When you were always free
Ask me why I protest
And I will ask you why racism still exists in this country
Why?
